Anyway, as most of you know Drew is in the hospital again. This time at the University of Calif, San Francisco-Medical Research Center. The doctors at San Ramon Medical (where he was in July) felt they couldn't do enough at their facilities. The surgeon, Doug Hamstra, directed us to UCSF after we went to see Bill Bryson at the wound care center at San Ramon Medical yesterday. It was between there and Stanford due to their research focuses. We're hoping we can get a new outlook on all this with, as Drew's mom says, "fresh eyes". UCSF is way up on a hill overlooking the city. His first room had a great view. You could see from the Golden Gate bridge all the way to the TransAmerica pyramid downtown. Until the fog came in that is ;)He's been moved to another room due to concern over the discovery of an aneurysm on his leg, near his groin. It looks as though he's had it for yrs (it can't be seen from the surface, it's internal). An aneurysm is a localized, blood-filled dilatation of a blood vessel caused by a disease or weakening of the vessel's wall. It causes a wall of blood under the surface and if it ruptures it can be very serious. There's a wall of calcium around the aneurysm suggesting he's had it for a long time but they can't be sure. It showed up when they did a CAT scan today and no one has ever seen it before. This is TOTALLY new as of today! Scary on top of all the other scary stuff. They fear it could rupture at any moment so they are just being cautious putting him in a ward where his vitals can be monitored every 2 hrs. It's not a great room space wise but that's okay. We understand. They had hoped to do the skin/tissue flap surgery today but delayed it do to this new development. They're afraid if they do anything in that general area they may disturb the aneurysm. It's possible the pressure sores have exasserbated the aneurysm and the fever could even have been brought on by the aneurysm, too. It's most likely that was brought on by the pressure sore infection in the bone of the 2nd sore opening but since they don't know they're covering all their bases. This is good.
